Big Green Bikes
How to replace gas power with people power
Each year, Dartmouth throws away about 120 bikes that get abandoned or broken around campus. What if a small team of Dartmouth students worked with a group of local high schoolers to run a business refurbishing the bikes over the summer? The high school students get mentorship, job skills training, a practical skill (bike mechanics) and bikes that they get to refurbish for themselves. The Dartmouth students learn how to run a business and develop leadership skills. Then, at the end of the summer, they sell the bikes in a big bike sale and fund the program for the next year.
