OTHER EVENTS

Towards a Modernist Ecology of Riddle: A talk by Rasheed Tazudeen
Thursday, October 24th | 4:30PM - 6PM | Carpenter Hall 201F
  • A non-anthropocentric way of understanding riddle in literature sponsored by the Dartmouth Society of Fellows.

  • How does modernist literature help us to think about planetary change, including climate collapse, sea-level rise, mass species extinctions and the onset of the Anthropocene, and other aspects of our current ecological catastrophe? In this talk, I explore how modernist and contemporary metamodernist writers—particularly Virginia Woolf, Franz Kafka, and Alexis Pauline Gumbs—persistently engaged with questions of ecological thought, species extinction, and the forms that ethical co-existence between human and nonhuman or inhuman beings (including the planet itself) might take

NEXT WEEK

Disaster Justice Symposium
Monday, October 28th | 6:00PM – 7:30PM | Dartmouth Hall 105
  • A community conversation on the directions of disaster justice work. Featuring Roberto Barrios (University of New Orleans), Melissa Rosario (CEPA, Puerto Rico), Sarah Kelly (Dartmouth College), Noah Bezanson (Colorado School of Mines), and Melissa Rockhill (Ludlow area Long Term Recovery Group).

The George Link Jr. Environmental Awareness Lecture | Arun Agrawal: Social Action, Commoning, and Social Change
Monday, October 28th | 4:30-5:30pm
  • This talk examines the relationship between social action, commoning, and social change. Its goal is to assess how each of these concepts and associated meanings can inspire actions based in research, teaching, and engagement for societal transformations towards justice and sustainability.

  • The talk will briefly reflect on the relationship between knowledge and action as goals of education in democratic societies and ask whether a focus on experiential learning for deeper, durable knowledge is also a call for action through education. The relationship between commoning, social action, and social change provides a platform for enacting social change, achieving deeper engagement with the arts of citizenship, and building on canonical scholarship related to the commons and social movements.
