FREE MARKET THRIFT STORE
WELCOME TO THE FREE MARKET!
We are an on-campus thrift store run by students in the Dartmouth Sustainability Office. The thrift store exists to provide students with access to sustainable (and awesome) clothing, outdoor gear, books, and more. We take donated items from across campus to help reduce the massive amount of clothing waste that our community produces each year at move-out time.
We envision a space where folks can have their material needs met, engage in a community-driven mutual aid effort, and feel empowered to be their fullest selves!
WHERE ARE WE LOCATED?
We’re in the basement of North Massachusetts Hall. The best way to find us is to enter through the north-facing door by the Massachusetts Lot under the fire escape (same entrance as Transportation Services).
WHEN ARE WE OPEN FOR THRIFTING?
Our open hours for Fall 2024 are Tuesdays 6-8pm, Wednesdays 5-7pm, Fridays 11:30am-1:30pm, Saturdays 4-7pm, and Sundays 12-3pm. Please check the calendar on our homepage or sign up for our Ruckus listserv for the most up-to-date hours!
All students (graduate and undergraduate), faculty, and staff are welcome to come shop in the store during these times!
For donations, the building is accessible to all during Thrift Store open hours and from 8AM - 4PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and it is accessible to students with residential hall access during other hours.
How MUCH DOES STUFF COST?
Everything is FREE! Hence our name, which is a play on the capitalist notion of the so-called “free market economy.” We’ve taken money out of the equation because we believe that everyone deserves access to clothing, regardless of socioeconomic status or other identities. There is enough on this campus, so we’re working to overcome scarcity mindsets by providing for our community.
AWESOME! HOW CAN I CONTRIBUTE?
For starters, don’t buy unnecessary clothing! Think hard before you swipe your credit card–if it’s just going to end up in our collection bins in a few months, maybe it’s not worth the environmental and labor costs. We work hard to process all the clothing that comes out of Dartmouth’s waste stream, but right now, we can’t keep up!
Volunteer opportunities are posted regularly on Trailhead. You can also donate clothing items to the Free Market via the donation bins in the hallway outside of the store during hours that the building is open. Please note that we do not accept non-clothing items.
