WELCOME LETTER TO INCOMING CLASS OF '28
Dear First Year,
Welcome to the sustainability community at Dartmouth! Creating positive change in the world is hard work that requires a strong community of support. Our staff has been building a sustainability community that works together with creativity, passion, and action to tackle the pressing sustainability challenges facing us today.
For those of you new to the scene, Dartmouth Sustainability works to challenge and empower Dartmouth College and our students to take on the human and environmental problems of a rapidly changing planet. We do this via applied learning, building an inclusive community, supporting teaching and scholarship, and transforming campus operations.
The sustainability community is a broad and diverse group of students, faculty, staff, alums, and community members. We need you! No matter your identities, experience, or academic interests, YOUR ideas matter to us. Students are an integral part of this work! Nearly all our programs and initiatives were started by students identifying a need or opportunity, pitching an excellent idea, and following up to make it happen!
And now is your moment. As our school embarks on a once-in-a-generation commitment to decarbonize our campus and transform our energy system, you have an unmatched opportunity to gain hands-on experience at what energy and sustainability transitions look like on the ground and to have a chance to leave our campus better than when you came!
We are so excited about this momentum towards a sustainable future and we need your help to keep it going. As a Dartmouth student, you will have the opportunity to change Dartmouth for the better and to help Dartmouth be a leader in sustainability. In short, Dartmouth will change you, and you will change Dartmouth.
Sound good to you? Great! We can't wait to get started.
From all of us in the Dartmouth Sustainability Office,
Rosi Kerr, Director of Sustainability
Laura Braasch, Assistant Director - Experiential Learning
Marcus Welker, Assistant Director - Operations
Rachel Kent, Program Coordinator
Jack Walker, Program Coordinator
Erin Kelly, Program Assistant
GET INVOLVED
SUNRISE DARTMOUTH
The Sunrise Movement is a youth climate justice movement that is advocating for a Green New Deal. The Green New Deal is a plan for a decade-long mobilization of the United States to overhaul our national infrastructure and help our ailing planet. It is also a plan to address multiple issues of inequality and injustice in our country today by creating jobs directly related to stopping climate change, the greatest existential threats ever faced by humanity, and implementing social programs to help all Americans, especially the poor and other marginalized peoples.
No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, these issues affect all of us. If you’re interested and want to help out, you’ll be happy to know that there is a Sunrise Movement hub specifically for Dartmouth!!
FREE MARKEt Thrift Store
We are an on-campus thrift store run by students in the Dartmouth Sustainability Office. We take donated items from across campus to help reduce the massive amount of clothing waste that our community produces each year at move-out time.
